How long does it take for building permits?

Data gathered by the National Multifamily Housing Council suggests building permit timelines vary widely among municipalities throughout the nation. A March 2026 survey shows the majority said it takes 5-6 months to get them from their local entities.

Survey results show it takes:

• Up to 2 months: 2%

• 3-4 months: 29%

• 5-6 months: 33%

• 7-8 months: 10%

• 9+ months: 14%

A majority 55% said jurisdictions are imposing additional project requirements unrelated to the actual project construction.
